Pintrest and Instagram, these are the major channels bride and grooms always head straight to when looking at ideas for their wedding flowers. The main flower 9 out of 10 couples always mention to me is Gypsophila! This is thanks to it always sneaking in on these popular social media channels in every wedding picture!
Now think of all the weddings you have attended over the years, you probably might not of noticed it, maybe haven't thought about it but good old Gypsophila would of crept in there! On the tables, the bouquet even the brides and bridesmaids hair!
Now I do love Gypsophila its light, fluffy in texture and admittedly its pretty! BUT it does lack scent, dries out very quickly and it is very rigid and lacks flow particularly in bouquet work.
In floristry Gypsophila is known as a filler flower, there to add lightness, softness and compliment your primary and secondary flowers such as Peonies and Roses. Don't get me wrong in certain settings Gypsophila works really well but there are beautiful alternatives out there which don't get the lime light! So look no further here's your guide to the flowers you never even thought of including on your special day which might just steal your heart!
Wax Flower
Beautifully dainty, free flowing flower native to Australia and symbolises long lasting love, which is why incorporating it into your bouquet is a lovely addition. It has masses of round almost pearlescent buds which develop into dainty blooms with a waxy texture, this well-known flower is renowned for its citrus scent. Not only is it available in white, but in pale pink and cerise pink.

Ammi
Ammi is another beauty that looks absolutely fantastic and makes you feel like you're in a meadow. Whether it’s a minimalist bridesmaid bouquet or a hanging cloud, it’s such a lovely whimsy option. It adds a lovely texture to fuller bouquets and arrangements too, adding height and movement, dancing around to give a pretty country garden feel. In summer it’s in its peak, which makes it super easy to source locally too.

Genista
In late winter and early spring this beauty is in its prime and it smells amazing, lovely and sweet. This isn’t as cloud like as Gypsophila or Ammi but it’s long stems add gorgeous texture and movement to a bouquet, swaying gently when carried. It looks beautiful paired with eucalyptus and soft ruffley blooms for an airy fairy feel. Also available in pink and yellow.

Astrantia
My all time favorite! The pretty little flower heads of Astrantia aren’t quite as dainty but they’re another really lovely option for a wild flower look. They have that real rustic feel to them. They look beautiful mixed in with other petite blooms. These also come in lovely burgundy and pink hues which would look gorgeous together for a tonal summer bouquet.

Astilbe
Another beauty that comes in lots of lovely white and pink shades, which I love to mix all together. Definitely much more of a garden style option with a really rustic, feathery, gorgeous textural feel to it.
